Last week, the White House released its 233-page national response plan for an influenza pandemic.

The plan states that a pandemic will weaken medical care levels in the country, and under those conditions it may become necessary to use triage to determine whether infected patients gain access to hospital ventilators and intensive care units.

Nonclinical workers may need to handle tasks not related to their jobs, while clinicians may have to staff temporary medical facilities, visit patients at their homes, or provide medical care via the Internet.
