Cleaning and reusing the N95 respirators used to protect healthcare workers during an avian flu pandemic is not a good idea, according to an April 27 report by Institute of Medicine (IOM).

Assuming that the production and stockpiling of respiratory personal protective equipment may fall short in the event of a flu pandemic, the Department of Health and Human Services asked the IOM to investigate the potential for reusing N95 respirators, which manufacturers label as disposable.

The IOM report could not identify or recommend

design alterations to permit reuse

methods of decontamination to remove the viral threat

simple modifications to current respirators eliminating the need for fit-testing
