Assuming that the production and stockpiling of respiratory personal protective equipment may fall short in the event of a flu pandemic, the Department of Health and Human Services asked the IOM to investigate the potential for reusing N95 respirators, which manufacturers label as disposable.
The IOM report could not identify or recommend
design alterations to permit reuse
methods of decontamination to remove the viral threat
simple modifications to current respirators eliminating the need for fit-testing
For more information on respirator reuse and extended use, surgical mask protection, and improvised protection, read "Reusability of Facemasks During an Influenza Pandemic: Facing the Flu."
