The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) is investigating injuries and accidents that have taken place involving magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) equipment.

The matter will likely serve as a topic for a future edition of the JCAHO's Sentinel Event Alert, according to an April 20 internal memo sent to surveyors, which HCPro obtained.

This investigation may have been prompted by reports of sporadic shocks to MRI patients, during which dust in the machine transferred the electric current from the equipment to the patient, says a source familiar with the JCAHO.

The JCAHO has asked surveyors with experience in radiation or MRI issues to contact the accreditor.
