In its latest advisory, the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) seeks to educate patients about "anesthesia awareness", a rare event in which a patient may regain consciousness during surgery.

  • preoperative evaluation of the patient's risk for awareness
  • use of equipment checklists
  • monitoring depth of anesthesia
  • drug selection
