A new guide, Safe Lifting and Movement of Nursing Home Residents, appeared on the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Web site this month.
Intended for nursing home owners, administrators, nurse managers, safety and health professionals, and workers, the guide makes a strong case for adopting mechanical lifting equipment to protect workers from injury and improve the quality of care delivered to residents.
The 32-page guide is the result of NIOSH's collaboration with the Veterans' Health Administration and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. It demonstrates how businesses can recover the lifting equipment investment through reduced workers' compensation expenses and costs associated with lost and restricted work days.
