The U.S. Senate confirmed Edwin G. Foulke Jr. as assistant secretary of labor for OSHA on March 15.
"Ed has extensive knowledge and experience in workplace safety and health issues that he will put to use to protect workers and promote employer compliance," said Secretary of Labor Elaine L. Chao in announcing the confirmation.
President Bush nominated Foulke to lead OSHA on September 15, 2005. Appearing before the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions on January 31, Foulke acknowledged concern and support for measures to protect healthcare workers against the spread of airborne diseases such as avian flu and SARS. Foulke also said that he supports the respiratory protection standard and its fit-testing requirements.
