Georgia hospitals are working with their state government to improve disaster planning and response by installing a new communications system.

The Georgia Hospital Association, in collaboration with the state Department of Public Health, awarded a $3.4 million contract to LiveProcess in Madison, NJ, for an emergency preparedness computer program that the company has developed.

The purchase makes Georgia the first state in the country to have standardized emergency software for all of its acute care  hospitals. Installation began in January at Georgia's 150 hospitals.

The software enables emergency managers at hospitals and state agencies to securely share their plans in standardized formats.
