It won't be business as usual for home healthcare agencies if a flu pandemic hits. Providing care in the home will be a critical part of a flu pandemic response, and the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) issued a checklist for home healthcare organizations on March 3.
Adapted from the HHS hospital preparedness tool, the checklist addresses key areas for pandemic influenza planning and helps to identify strengths and shortcomings of plans already in place. It is comprehensive to home healthcare services, but agencies will need to make modifications to address unique or unanticipated patient care situations.
Similar to hospitals and ambulatory healthcare facilities, home healthcare agencies will need to cope with personnel and supply shortages while the demand for patient care increases.
