The National Foundation for Infectious Diseases (NFID) has added its support for vaccinating all healthcare workers against pertussis, also known as whooping cough.
The endorsement follows the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices' recommendations calling for the tetanus-diphtheria-acellular pertussis booster to be routinely given to healthcare workers in place of the previously recommended tetanus-diphtheria booster.
The NFID says that the approximately eight to 10 million healthcare workers employed in hospital and ambulatory settings have nearly twice the risk of contracting pertussis than the general adult population.
