The escalating incidence of needlestick injuries and the rising cost of treating those injuries have created a booming market for needle-free devices, according to a market research company report.

Kalorama Information's February 1 report, "Needle-free Injection Systems and Safety Syringes: The Market for Alternatives to Needle-based Delivery," predicts a sustained growth rate of 11% in that market for the next four years.

U.S. healthcare workers average 600,000 to 1 million needlesticks a year with as many as 80% of the injuries preventable by the use of needle-free devices, states the report. Treating a worker for a needlestick costs healthcare facilities $3,000 per incident even when no infection results from the injury, according to the report.

Patients' fear of needles and compliance problems with the use of needles with safety devices will continue to grow the market and justify higher prices for the devices, the report concludes.
