Sometimes a patient's history and physical (H&P) may not be sufficient for a thorough preoperative assessment. Robin Cameron, RN, assistant director of nurses at Northeast Surgical Care in Newington, NH, suggests supplementing the H&P by interviewing the patient over the telephone and asking following questions:

  • Have you ever had surgery before? If so, have you had problems with anesthesia in the past, such as malignant hyperthermia or vomiting? Has a family member ever had trouble with anesthesia?
  • Do you have airway problems, such as sleep apnea or snoring?
  • Do you have temporomandibular joint or major dental work that we need to watch out for?
  • Have you ever had a heart condition, high blood pressure, stroke, heart attack, fainting, or dizzy spells?
  • What medications and dosages are you currently taking?
