OSHA sustained a vigorous enforcement program during the 2005 fiscal year despite temporary suspension of activities due to hurricanes Katrina and Rita, according to a January 31 report appearing on its Web site.
The agency performed 38,714 inspections, exceeding its goal of 37,700 but down from 39,167 in FY 2004. "OSHA responded to more employee complaints and conducted more inspections based on referrals from other agencies than the previous year," states the report.
OSHA slapped employers with 85,307 violations in FY 2005, a 9.5% increase since 2001 but 1,401 fewer than in FY 2004. Willful violations jumped 62% from the previous year, which demonstrates the agency's focus on identifying employers intentionally violating the law, the report claims.
