March 13 is a bit of a watershed, because after three years of buildup, healthcare occupancies as defined in the Life Safety Code® must remove roller latches from corridor doors.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations will inspect these doors to make sure that facilities have replaced roller latches with positive latching devices.
A roller latch can be released by simply pushing or pulling on a door, while positive latching requires someone to turn a knob or lever to open the door.
