There were at least 25 attempted escapes and five successful ones during a three-month period in 2005 at Tewksbury (MA) State Hospital.

The figures were reported by The Lowell Sun, which obtained police logs for the hospital under the state public records law.

The report is the latest development is a string of discussions prompted by concerned local officials, who worry the hospital's security policies are lax.

The town's police chief told The Sun that he recognizes the hospital is not a prison, but is upset that hospital officials have not kept him update on when patients receive passes to leave the campus.

The Sun was unable to obtain comments from the hospital.
