The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has announced on its Web site that revisions to its emergency drill requirements will go into effect on July 1.

Environment of care (EC) standard EC.4.20 requires hospitals to conduct at least two disaster drills a year. In 2005, the JCAHO conducted a field review of proposed changes to EC.4.20, including a greater emphasis on drill observations and post-exercise critiques.

At this point, the JCAHO's Web site doesn't list the specific provisions in the revised standard. However, the revisions "will require health care organizations to improve the planning and evaluation of emergency management drills," according to the JCAHO.
