Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care's (AAAHC) standard 2.B.3b says "current competence [must be] verified in writing by individuals personally familiar with the applicant's clinical, professional, and ethical performance and, when available, by data based on analysis of treatment outcomes."

Two physicians or dentists involved in practice must participate in the peer review process. The healthcare professionals within the organization must decide which criteria to examine, says Kaufman. If you have a solo practitioner at your center, enlist a colleague from outside of the organization to peer review.

The AAAHC doesn't require those who perform peer review and the one who is reviewed to work at the same facility. The key is to peer-review at the appropriate level.
