Staff at the Russell Student Health Center at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa were having problems following up with and contacting patients who were sent for referral to another healthcare provider.

To solve this problem, the center began a new program that made a licensed practical nurse a referral nurse, says Kimberly A. Parker, RN, BSN, the center's quality improvement coordinator. When patients need referrals, they are sent to this person. The nurse makes the referral, knows insurance criteria, and follows up on whether patients kept the appointment. If they did not, she contacts them to try to reschedule.
