The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) has established a new group that will advise the JCAHO as it seeks to increase physician involvement in the accreditation process.
The 18-member Physician Engagement Advisory Group will also help the JCAHO to "broaden engagement in quality of care and patient safety initiatives," according to a press release from the JCAHO.
The group is comprised of physician quality directors and educators, chief medical officers, private practice physicians, and other physician leaders, including Rebecca Twersky, MD, the medical director for the ambulatory surgery unit of Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, NY.
"Physician leadership and involvement are critically important to the success of patient care and patient safety improvement efforts," says William E. Jacott, MD, special advisor for professional relations, Joint Commission.
"The Physician Engagement Advisory Group will assist the Joint Commission in identifying opportunities to work with physicians and physician groups on specific initiatives that will improve the quality and safety of patient care," he said.
