The American Health Care Association (AHCA) recently expressed concern about Medicare's restrictions on the amount of help nursing homes can give residents in choosing a drug benefit. CMS established the rule because of concerns that facilities would steer residents to plans that were most convenient for the SNF, rather than best for the resident, according the Dallas Morning News. However, this reasoning fails to recognize the situations of elder residents who confuse easily, said AHCA and the Long Term Care Pharmacy Alliance, who asked CMS to ease up the restrictions.

Without proper understanding of available drug benefits, it is almost impossible for a resident to choose a plan that is best for him or her, according to the associations. With efforts to remove the ban on drug plan advice, customer welfare will be placed first and appropriate benefits will be given to residents, they told the Morning News.
