Ontario healthcare workers face a higher risk of occupational infections than other Canadian coworkers because the government has not mandated the use of safety needles, claims the Ontario Nurses' Association. The association, in partnership with Service Employees International Union and the Ontario Public Service Employees Union, launched a $100,000 advertising campaign on November 15 to seek public support for changing provincial labor laws and obtaining funding for safer equipment.

Safety-engineered sharps will prevent 33,000 injuries a year and save $4 million in costs associated with needlestick accidents, says the campaign.

Manitoba and Saskatchewan have safety needles mandates taking effect next year, and British Columbia and Nova Scotia are also examining safety-needle legislation.
