The city of Boston has proposed new, strict safety regulations for research laboratories working with dangerous biological agents in hospitals and universities.

The proposal would require the city to issue safety permits to the labs and mandate that members of the public serve on internal safety committees, according to The Boston Globe.

The proposal stems from a series of tularemia infections to three Boston University Medical Center researchers last year, The Globe reported. Tularemia, also called rabbit fever, can be fatal if not treated.
