Readers of Safety Connection have asked us to publish some of the results of our poll on emergency response plans, which we featured in our November 3 issue.
Here are the highlights:
- 54% of respondents said their facilities would revise emergency plans following the lessons from Hurricane Katrina
- 64% of those who responded believed that their current emergency plan could handle disasters identified by the facility, while 19% said their plans couldn't do so and 17% weren't sure
- Eight out of 10 respondents have plans that feature an incident command system, and of those, 66% use the Hospital Emergency Incident Command System
Also, it appears the biggest training needs by slight margins are in full building evacuation and recovery efforts, poll results indicate.
Finally, respondents told us that their most important concerns in emergency planning are fires in the facility, storms like blizzards and hurricanes, and epidemics. Their least important worry by far was earthquakes.
If you have specific questions about the poll results, please e-mail Senior Managing Editor Scott Wallask at swallask@hcpro.com.
