With the threat of a "bird flu" pandemic, the CDC regularly updates its Avian Influenza Web page with information for the general public as well as healthcare professionals. The spread of avian flu, travel advisories, and Interim Recommendations for Infection Control in Health-Care Facilities Caring for Patients with Known or Suspected Avian Influenza are among the topics available.

Avian influenza is a contagious disease among animals caused by viruses that normally infect only birds and, less commonly, pigs. Avian influenza viruses are species-specific, but have, on rare occasions, crossed the species barrier to infect humans.
