Approximately 75% of hospitals have emergency plans for responding to explosive or incendiary attacks, but only 20% of the facilities conduct drills related to those type of incidents, the CDC reported in the October 28 Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. Also, hospitals in metropolitan areas were more likely to have plans and conduct emergency drills than nonmetropolitan hospitals.

The information comes from Bioterrorism and Mass Casualty Preparedness in Hospitals: United States, 2003, a National Center for Health Statistics report.
