Surgical fire victims continue to push legal claims against allegedly negligent hospitals--and their efforts are attracting media attention.
Within the past month, we've read about:
- A patient who filed a civil claim against Swedish Medical Center in Seattle for injuries suffered after her face and neck caught fire during a procedure, according to The Seattle Times
- A patient who sued United Health Services, which owns Wilson Regional Medical Center in Johnson City, NY, and two physicians for disfiguring injuries after a surgical fire, reports the Press & Sun-Bulletin in Binghamton
It doesn't hurt to remind your surgeons about the legal and public relations problems that medical centers face following a fire during a procedure. Our award winning video, OR Surgical Fire Training, is a good resource for hospitals and ambulatory surgical centers who want to offer refresher training for operating room staff.
