The National Institute for Occupational Health and Safety (NIOSH) announced last week the creation of 21 Web pages specific to toxic workplace materials generating the most inquiries from the public. Six of the toxic materials are common to healthcare facilities:

Ethylene oxide

Formaldehyde

Mercury

Nitrous oxide

Toluene

Xylene

Each page has links to exposure limits, personal protective equipment, respirator recommendations, exposure symptoms, and first aid for that substance.

NIOSH also maintains a healthcare worker Web page which has information on preventing exposures to glutaraldehyde and latex.
