Last week, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released updated guidelines for healthcare workers who face potential HIV exposures after a needlestick.
Most of the revisions focus on post-exposure prophylaxis, which is essentially the drug treatment that potentially infected workers must endure in response to an HIV exposure. The drugs are toxic and often have a rash of unpleasant side effects.
Among the changes in the guidelines are recommendations about new medications to consider for post-exposure prophylaxis and the selection of tolerable regimens. Click here to read the full CDC report.
