The Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) recently issued recommendations for revisions to its accreditation standards and is accepting comments on the proposed changes until October 24.
According to the AAAHC, highlights of the proposal include:
- Raise sub-elements of existing standards in Chapter 4: Quality of Care, Chapter 8: Environment of Care, and Chapter 15: Pharmaceutical Services, to full standards to emphasize their significance
- Add a note in Chapter 9: Anesthesia Services to reflect concern for the safe administration of drugs that do not have an antagonist medication
- Add a note in Chapter 10: Surgical Services to recognize care settings where standards may not apply if the nature of the procedures performed do not require anesthesia, or require only local or topical anesthesia
- Expand Chapter 12: Dental Services significantly to provide more detailed standards specifically relevant to dental care
- Revise Chapter 17: Diagnostic and Other Imaging Services to ensure that standards are applicable to the purposes for which imaging services are provided.
- Move travel medicine standards from Chapter 19: Employee and Occupational Health Service to Chapter 20 as these services may be provided in a variety of ambulatory settings
- Revise Chapter 20: Other Professional and Technical Services to include standards governing travel medicine
The revised standards are scheduled to take effect March 1, 2006.
