OSHA officials identified occupational asthma as a concern that warrants local and regional emphasis programs which would include enforcement and outreach and compliance assistance, reported Inside OSHA on August 8. The information came from the July 14 National Advisory Committee on Occupational Safety and Health meeting.

Compiling a list of chemicals that cause occupational asthma to identify at-risk industries is the first step to creating a directive for emphasis programs. The proposed list of asthma-causing substances include acrylates, amines, anhydrides, colophony, enzymes, epoxy resins, Freon, furfuryl alcohol, resins, isocyanates, latex, organophosphates, polyvinyl chloride, and vegetable gums.

A National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety report published in the March American Journal of Industrial Medicine identified healthcare workers as having a higher incidence of work-related asthma than the general workforce.
