Southeast hospitals suffering in the wake of Hurricane Katrina are dealing with terrible conditions that are likely even worse than those experienced by medical facilities during Houston's flooding four years ago from Tropical Storm Allison.
For example:
- Flood waters at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans rose 1 in. every five minutes on Monday night, a spokesperson told USA Today
- Tenet Healthcare Corporation said that it evacuated its Memorial Medical Center and Lindy Boggs Medical Center in New Orleans, and Gulf Coast Medical Center in Biloxi, MS, after determining water and structural damage to the buildings made it too risky for them to care for patients
- Doctors brought supplies by canoe to Charity Hospital in New Orleans, and workers were then forced to deliver the items to various floors using darkened stair towers, according to the Associated Press
