President Bush signed the Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 into law on July 29. The bill had passed both houses of Congress with overwhelming bipartisan support.

The Patient Safety and Quality Improvement Act of 2005 encourages healthcare providers to share information about medical errors by protecting workers who report mistakes from employer reprisals. The legislation also protects healthcare facilities by declaring the information confidential and preventing its use in civil and criminal proceedings.

The legislation applies to healthcare providers, which the act defines as "an individual or entity licensed or otherwise authorized under state law to provide healthcare services."
