Mock drill: Chlorine explosion tests emergency personnel in Texas

Emergency Management Alert, August 2, 2005

A mock chlorine explosion at a graphite plant in Texas last week tested local emergency personnel's ability to effectively manage a disaster scene in the intense Southwestern heat, reports the Wise County Messenger in Decatur, TX.

Personnel experiencing high temperatures inside hooded plastic suits responded well, according to Catherine Sandlin, a registered nurse at Wise Regional Health System in Decatur. But Sandlin said the drill demonstrated a need to update communication equipment.

The mock explosion yielded just 12 "victims."

Wise Regional Health System employees wearing orange vests, which were easily visible to civilians, manned entrances and questioned all who entered, and directed visitors to the proper location.
