Bird flu or not bird flu, that is the question
Emergency Management Alert, August 2, 2005
Skeptical health officials in Indonesia are seeking a second opinion from experts in Hong Kong after an Indonesian man tested positive for bird flu shortly after dying from severe pneumonia last week, the Associated Press reports.
Indonesia's health ministry says the man had no history of contact with sick birds. The man's two young daughters, who also died from pneumonia, tested negative for bird flu.
Health officials fear the test is flawed, since the H5N1 strain has mainly been transmitted between animals.
About 300 people are under observation for having contact with the dead man. No one has shown signs of infection.
For now, the World Health Organization lists the death as a "suspected case" of bird flu.
