Police: PA pharmacist stole 30,000 OxyContin pills

Emergency Management Alert, July 19, 2005

The Pennsylvania Health Department is asking Grand View Hospital in Sellersville to explain how it allowed a pharmacy worker to steal 30,000 does of OxyContin over the course of three years, reports the Allentown (PA) Morning Call.

Brian S. Young, a pharmacist at the hospital, allegedly stole 30,000 pills worth $150,000, taking as many as 25 pills per day, police say.

The department is investigating whether the hospital should have discovered the theft much earlier by following the agency's requirements.

Officials expect the probe to take two weeks and violations could result in fines up to $20,000.

The hospital has since changed its policies on disbursement of drugs after another pharmacist discovered the thefts by noticing that someone entered his name into a logbook indicating that he distributed OxyContin.
