Buried in a series about the Medicare program that The Washington Post published this week was an interesting tidbit about validation inspections from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

In past years, CMS typically conducted validation visits to 5% of hospitals that the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) accredited. Then that number dropped to 1% in 2003 due to budget constraints.

Last summer, a report from the Government Accountability Office criticized JCAHO surveys. The report recommended that CMS resurrect the 5% rate for validation surveys, which CMS publicly agreed with.

Well, that goal didn't happen, The Post reported. Again due to budget concerns, the agency's 5% plan was reduced to 2% this year, according to The Post.
