A rare infant abduction occurred on July 15 at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC.

A short time later near the hospital, police and hospital security officers recovered the unharmed newborn, who may have been carried out in a black duffel bag. The child's father allegedly took the baby, and police arrested him and the mother on charges of child abuse, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and resisting arrest, according to the Charlotte Observer.

County social services officials had apparently been preparing to take custody of the baby based on the parents' alleged poor history with their other children, the Observer reported.

Babies at the hospital wear two wrist bracelets that match those of their parents, as well as an electronic ankle bracelet that sounds an alarm if an infant leaves the maternity ward without warning. In this case, the alarm notified staff of the problem quickly.
