Government negotiating purchase of bird flu drug

Emergency Management Alert, July 5, 2005

The U.S. government is aggressively negotiating the purchase of two million doses of the only drug known to be effective against the bird flu, reports the Associated Press.

But the government may be late to the party. Producing Tamiflu, which Hoffman-La Roche, Inc. manufactures, is a lengthy process, and several other countries have beaten the United States to the punch.

The government has stockpiled only enough Tamiflu to treat 2.3 million people. An additional two million doses would only treat about 2% of the U.S. population. Other countries, such as Britain, France, Finland, Norway, and New Zealand, are placing orders for Tamiflu that would treat up to 40% of their populations.

A bird flu pandemic in the United States would likely kill at least 250,000 people, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
