July 1 is historically an important mid-year date for new Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations' requirements to go into effect, and this year is no exception.
As of July 1, hospitals needed to
- establish criteria for those people who complete their Statement of Conditions under environment of care (EC) standard EC.5.20
- institute any interim measures that offset deficiencies identified by the hospital under the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) standard USP 797--for EC fans, this provision should prompt sites to check whether the pharmacy has a compounding area if renovations are necessary to the normal preparation room to comply with USP 797
- apply updated procedures for environmental control, gowning, and equipment use for pharmacy compounding, also under USP 797
USP 797 discusses a variety of provisions that relate to the EC, mainly stemming from the physical environment in which sterile drug preparation occurs.
