Less virulent bird flu strain pops up in Japan

Emergency Management Alert, June 28, 2005

Japanese health officials have detected a less virulent strain of the deadly bird flu virus at a chicken farm in northeastern Japan, reports the Associated Press.

The H5N2 strain is not considered to pose an imminent threat to humans, unlike the H5N1 strain, but the virus has killed more than 800 chickens in Mitsukaido, just northeast of Tokyo.

Farms within a three-mile radius of Mitsukaido may not ship any birds or eggs until the outbreak is contained.
