AR officials use table top exercise to measure hospital preparedness for bioterrorism attack

Emergency Management Alert, June 28, 2005

Hospital employees in Arkansas participated in a table top bioterrorism drill two weeks ago to determine how prepared hospitals are to respond to a bioterrorism attack, reports the Newport (AR) Independent.

The objectives of the exercise, which the North Central Region of the Arkansas Bioterrorism Committee conducted, was to

  • test the decision making process

  • identify areas for refinement

  • review interaction and cooperation between local, state, and federal agencies

  • develop ties between medical and criminal investigations

  • access medical capabilities

  • test media response plans

After receiving details of the "attack," health officials from 13 counties submitted a written response plan to organizers from the Arkansas Bioterrorism Committee based on existing policies.
