Vietnamese health officials: H5N1 mutating, likely to infect more humans

Emergency Management Alert, June 28, 2005

The antigen structure of the H5N1 bird flu virus is mutating rapidly, bolstering the infection potential among humans, according to Vietnam's agriculture ministry.

Laboratory tests reveal significant changes in the composition of the virus, which helps explain why health officials only detected one outbreak in poultry this month, while nine humans contracted the illness. It appears humans are becoming more susceptible to the virus, Vietnam's agriculture ministry believes.

Bird flu has killed 38 people in Vietnam since late 2003.
