IL facility tests its bioterrorism response

Emergency Management Alert, June 21, 2005

The Du Quoin (IL) Emergency Services and Disaster Agency conducted a full-scale terrorism exercise to determine Perry County's preparedness to respond to a public health threat, reports the Du Quoin Evening Call in Du Quoin, IL.

The imaginary emergency involved releasing a bacterium, tularemia, through hand dryers at the southern Illinois center. Tularemia causes a severe respiratory infection.

Between 250 and 300 people responded to the alert that Applied Marine Technologies, Inc. planned over the past 18 months. Ten "victims" were taken to hospitals as part of the exercise.

The final report evaluating all agencies' response actions will be released in 45 days.

Several other counties throughout southern Illinois will hold similar tests throughout the summer.
