New test can detect bird flu in 24 hours

Emergency Management Alert, June 14, 2005

In an international breakthrough, Australian scientists have developed a rapid test that reduces the time needed to detect the bird flu from three weeks to just one day, reports the Associated Press.

The test, which the Victoria State Department of Primary Industries developed, gives infectious disease experts a headstart in identifying potential outbreaks in time to minimize morbidity.

The test can detect 15 different strains of the virus, including strains that are transferable between humans.
