Personnel in Indiana respond well to biohazard emergency

Emergency Management Alert, June 14, 2005

Emergency personnel in Indiana controlled the spread of a deadly nerve agent and effectively communicated the information to limit the number of "victims" over three counties during a mock biohazard emergency last week, reports the Tribune Star in Terre Haute.

During the imaginary scenario, a one-ton container of the nerve agent VX leaked and caught fire. VX immediately became "airborne" over Vermillion County and drifted toward Parke and Fountain counties.

Sirens and notification systems alerted citizens to find shelter indoors, and to use plastic sheeting and duct tape to seal themselves in that area to prevent VX contamination.

Only 18 individuals were caught outside when the plume passed over.
