China to install early warning system for avian flu
Emergency Management Alert, June 7, 2005
One month after revelations that hundreds of migratory birds in the Qinghai province were dead from avian flu infection, the Chinese government announced last week a plan to launch an early warning system for outbreaks of the deadly virus strain.
The system will include a nationwide virus database, epidemic analysis and information sharing among foreign experts, and regular dissemination of information to the public.
China is a center of concern about avian flu since the most recent findings in May represented the last serious outbreak in nearly a year. Moreover, at least five species of birds succumbed to the virus, worrying experts that the virus is evolving and may soon result in human-to-human transmission.
