Avian flu symposium coming to Maryland
Emergency Management Alert, June 7, 2005
Discussing the threat of avian flu as a potential global killer will be the focal point of the "Just in time: Avian Influenza" symposium on June 14 at the Avrum Gudelsky Veterinary Center on the University of Maryland campus.
The symposium, which the Center for Public and Corporate Veterinary Medicine on the Maryland campus of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine is organizing, represents the first significant gathering of the world's top avian flu experts in the United States.
The goal is to share and disseminate factual information relating to, but not limited to, agricultural productivity and human health and well-being.
Daniel Perez, an associate professor and scientist who is considered to be one of the world's leading experts on avian flu and specifically human-to-human transmission of the virus, will present "Jumping influenza viruses from ducks to humans."
Other presenters include Nathaniel Tablante, associate professor and extension specialist; Tracy DuVernoy, U.S. Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service; Tom Jacobs, Maryland Department of Agriculture; and Jean Taylor, MD, Maryland Department of Health.
A panel discussion will conclude the one-day symposium.
