Remember Charles Cullen, the former nurse who over the years murdered at least 24 patients in various states with lethal doses of medication?
Cullen was arrested in 2003, and as part of an arrangement to avoid the death penalty, he agreed to speak with authorities about ways to stop similar killing sprees, according to the Morning Call of Allentown, PA.
The Morning Call reports that in mid-May, Cullen told New Jersey Attorney General Peter Harvey that hospitals should
- install cameras in medication storage rooms
- require nurses to use swipe cards to access medications
- label lethal drugs with bar codes to track their use
- conduct daily inventories of all potentially lethal drugs
- create a national database of employment histories for healthcare workers
