Water, salt join forces to fight infections, heal burns

Emergency Management Alert, May 17, 2005

A new solution combining water and salt is being lauded by physicians outside the United States as a burn healer and a potential weapon against "superbugs," bird flu and Ebola, and anthrax, according to Oculus Innovative Sciences, the Petaluma, CA, company that designed the solution.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted Oculus approval to test the solution, Microcyn, in wound treatment. Physicians in Mexico and India already say Microcyn's speed in healing severe burns is unmatched.

Oculus says Microcyn carries an ion imbalance that wipes out bacteria, viruses, and spores.

Hoji Alimi, who is the founder and president of Oculus, says the ion-hungry water ruptures the cell walls of single-celled organisms, releasing the cell's cytoplasm and preventing a negative impact.

Oculus is considering developing a misting device using Microcyn that could sterilize the air in hospital wards in the event of an epidemic.
