HHS gives states $1.3 billion to bolster emergency preparedness
Emergency Management Alert, May 17, 2005
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services last week announced the distribution of $1.3 billion in state funding intended to bolster the ability to respond to terrorism and other public health emergencies.
The funds will be used to enhance surveillance against infectious diseases, such as SARS and West Nile virus, and to improve the preparedness of hospitals and healthcare organizations faced with large numbers of casualties.
Additionally, the money will be used to expand public health laboratory and communication abilities, and communication between hospitals, and city, local, and state health departments.
