WHO to update measures on outbreak prevention

Emergency Management Alert, May 24, 2005

The World Health Organization (WHO) recently approved a proposal to update measures on quarantines and travel restrictions in an attempt to bolster the world's ability to tackle epidemics, reports The Associated Press.

WHO, which is represented by 192 countries, agreed to broaden the International Health Regulations to cover diseases that can easily jump from country to country, such as SARS, influenza, and polio.

The new measures will obligate countries to place preventative methods at airports, ports, and land borders to better detect and respond to an outbreak.
